5 e-scooters with the latest modern technology.

“Indigenous battery tech, localisation of components and huge domestic demand would make EVs the most affordable means of transport in coming years”.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Earlier Pune city used to be called a city of cycles, however, now it is known as the city of bikes and scooters. Almost every family in Pune is having a minimum of 1 bike/scooter to 3/4 depending on the family size.

The reason is poor public transport systems, mainly city buses are not sufficient enough to cater prompt service to the citizens, these buses run by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan  Mahamandal Limited. The city buses are crowded and smoke bleaches. However, in the past 5-6 years the buses are running on CNG and EV’s.

Petrol prices have skyrocketed, Petrol prices have already crossed centuries; currently, the rate of per litre petrol is around Rs.112/- in Pune and moving forward.

For a common man or middle-class man, it’s very difficult to survive, due to the pandemic almost all suffered, the situation is like a hand mouth. In this scenario using a petrol run vehicle is no more a cost-effective option for this class.

The government is also promoting EV’s, the reason is EV’s will help to reduce India’s crude oil import and EV’s are environment friendly having no noise, no pollution vehicles. The country will save a lot of foreign currency which is otherwise used for buying crude oil if people started using EV’s.

One of the main reasons why people are not ready to use EVs is because of their cost, they are more expensive than petrol Vehicles, and another reason is the running or driving range( in single charge) of the Vehicles.

To promote EV’s in India FAME [Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME-India)] has increased subsidies on EV’s,

Though the EV’s (REVA Car ) launched in India around 2001 and after the launch of other two-wheelers.

People are not ready to use EVs due to two reasons, one being the charging stations and the other being the range of the vehicles apart from the price of the EV.

The confidence of the people was built when they saw electric buses running in the city and having the range up to 300 KM in a single charge. The rise in petrol price certainly changed the thinking of the common man whether to buy a Petrol Vehicle or not.

In the current scenario, we are finding EV’s running on the road and people started using the EV’s as per their requirements. However, most of them prefer long driving range EVs for personal use.

We can compare EVs and Petrol Vehicles on certain parameters.

Cost of the Vehicles:- Indian customers are more price-sensitive while buying any product.EV’s are more expensive than petrol vehicles as the electric scooters run on lithium-ion batteries, which are costlier. However, due to the subsidy given by the government now, there is not much difference in the price of the vehicles.

Range of the Vehicles: Petrol Vehicles are having a wide range of products on the basis of the capacity of the engine. EV’s are in the early stage of development & only Few bike options are available in EV’s as compared to petrol vehicles.

Fuel Cost:– An electric scooter offers the same mileage as a petrol scooter at 15% cost of one litre of fuel. So electric scooters are more fuel-efficient than petrol scooters.

Operational Driving Range of the Vehicles: The EV’s are mostly suited for the city as the driving range of the EV’s are a minimum of 40 to 150 KM depending on the battery used in them. For daily usage and short-range, these are useful as compared to the petrol Vehicles. For long-range these are not suitable, maybe in the near future EV’s may have long driving range options.

Convenience: An electric scooter needs at least a couple of hours for a full charge. The same is not with the petrol scooters or bikes, it hardly takes a few minutes to refuel at the fuel station. Some e-Scooter manufacturers have the option of changing batteries in an emergency, however, it will take time to have more battery changing points like fuel stations.

Maintenance: EV’s are more or less maintenance free So EV’s are better than petrol in terms of maintenance. Only you need to keep the vehicle charging regularly and need to keep it clean. For Petrol Vehicles we need servicing depending on the running of the vehicles. They need lubricants,
Engine servicing etc.

In short EV’s also have many benefits over petrol vehicles. The EV’s are silent or have very low noise and they are environmentally friendly and non-polluting. The cost of running is around 20-30 paise per KM. Day by day technology is improving and in the near future EV’s will also come with more driving range and less charging time.

Because of all these benefits, EV’s sell is increasing. Currently, we are having EV’s with two options one which requires a Driving Licence and the other does not require any Driving Licence. The high powered EV’s required a driving licence and registration however the low powered Ev’s did not require a Driving Licence and Registration. The low powered EV is equipped with a 250 watt motor and a top speed of not more than 25 KMPH. So let’s find out which are the best options available in high powered EV’s if you would like to go for EV (E-Scooter)
